Adding Voicemail Messages to Thunderbird (Mac & Windows)

This Article assumes that Thunderbird or Mail.app are your default email clients. Other clients may work with similar account settings.

  1. Launch Mozilla Thunderbird from Start menu -> All Programs.
  2. Click on the 'Tools' menu and select 'Account settings...'
  3. Click on the 'Account Actions' button at the bottom and choose 'Add Mail Account...'.
  4. Fill in the required information (Leave the Password field blank and uncheck 'Remember password' for now to avoid setup issues).
    • Enter your name and email address in the corresponding fields of the 'Mail Account Setup' window. Click 'Continue'.
    • Click on the 'Manual Config' button at the bottom.
    • Make sure 'Incoming:' is 'IMAP' (NOT POP3) and type in: unity1.voip.geneseo.edu" in the 'Incoming: IMAP Server hostname' field.
    • Type in your Geneseo username (this is your email address without the "@geneseo.edu") in the 'Username' field.
    • Click on the 'Create Account' or 'Done' button at the bottom. If the 'Create Account' button is grayed out, click on the 'Re-test' button first, then click on the 'Create Account' button when it becomes available.
    • It will add a new account (and Inbox) to your current list of email accounts. Click once on this account on the left to highlight it.
    • You can enter a specific name, such as "Geneseo Voicemail" for this account in the 'Account Settings' screen under 'Account Name'.
    • If this screen is not open, you can access it by clicking on 'Tools' then 'Account Settings...'. 
    • Make sure you have "None" selected under 'Server Settings' - 'Security Settings' - 'Connection Security' or the messages won't come through or appear in your Voicemail Inbox.
    • Click 'OK' to close the 'Account Settings' window.
    • You will now have a separate Inbox for your Geneseo Voicemail. The password for this account is the same as your Geneseo email password.

Adding Voicemail Messages to Mail.app (Mac)

  1. Launch Mail.app.
  2. Click on the 'Mail' menu at the top and select 'Preferences...'
  3. Click on the 'Accounts' tab at the top of this screen (next to the 'General' tab).
  4. Click on the '+' at the bottom to add a new account.
  5. On the 'Add Account' screen, type in your full name and email address in the corresponding fields. Leave the 'Password' field blank. Click the 'Continue' button.
    • On the 'Incoming Mail Server' screen, click on the drop down arrow next to 'Account Type' and choose IMAP.
    • In the 'Description' field, type in: Geneseo Voicemail
    • In the 'Incoming Mail Server' field, type in: unity1.voip.geneseo.edu
    • In the 'User Name' field, type in your Geneseo username (this is your email address without the "@geneseo.edu").
    • In the 'Password' field, type in your Geneseo email password.
    • Click on the 'Continue' button at the bottom.
    • On the 'Outgoing Mail Server' screen, leave the 'Description' field blank.
    • In the 'Outgoing Mail Server' field, type in: smtp.geneseo.edu
    • Click on the 'Continue' button.
    • Check that you typed everything correctly on the 'Account Summary' screen, then click on the 'Create' button at the bottom.
    • It will add a new account (and Inbox) to your current list of email accounts on the left.
    • Click on the red dot in the upper left hand corner to close the 'Accounts' window.
    • If you need to get back to this window, click on the 'Mail' menu at the top and select 'Preferences...'
    • You will now have a separate Inbox for your Geneseo Voicemail. The password for this account is the same as your Geneseo email password.
