Self Help - Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) is available to the campus community. After establishing a connection to the internet, a user may set up VPN on their home machine to securely connect to the Geneseo network. This connection allows the user to access files on Geneseo machines and to browse the network just as if they were using a computer in any office or lab on campus.

The following list is a sample of Geneseo services and systems that require a VPN connection from off campus:

  • Changing your password (on a Windows computer - Ctrl/Alt/Del method)
  • Banner
  • Files server, including in/out boxes and personal, departmental, and project spaces
  • Library databases (select)
  • Printing to a campus networked printer
  • Software licensed by the campus (ArcGIS, Maple, Mathematica, Mathcad, MATLAB, Minitab, Labview, SPSS/PASW, Spartan, TI-Nspire, Vectorworks)
  • Virtual Lab

While SUNY Geneseo is pleased to be able to provide this service, please realize that it is the policy of the college to not support any home computers. CIT will attempt to provide on this web page suggestions and hints which we have experienced that may assist you when configuring your personal computer to use the VPN service. Thank you for your understanding.


VPN Client Configuration

VPN will not work while connected to the "Geneseo Guest" wireless network.

New Client - Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client (for Windows 8 and 10)

Instructions:

1.) Go to: https://asa.geneseo.edu/ in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Safari (does NOT work in Chrome).

 

2.) Select "Full Routes", enter your Geneseo username / password and click "Login".

 

3.) Click on "Windows Desktop (link)". This will download the VPN client software to your computer. 

 

4.) Click on "Run" if using Edge or Internet Explorer or navigate to your downloads folder and run the file downloaded to start the installer.

 

5.) Follow the installer instructions:

   a.) Select "I accept the terms in the License Agreement" and click "Next".

   b.) Click on "Install" and wait for the installer to finish.

   c.) Click "Finish" and close your browser.

 

6.) Press the "Windows Start button" (lower left hand corner of the screen) and type "VPN" to search for the app. Then click on "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client".

 

7.) Enter "asa.geneseo.edu" in the box and click "connect".

 

8.) Choose "FullRoutes", Enter your Geneseo username and password and click "OK".

 

9.) You should now be connected to VPN.  Simply click on "Disconnect" when your session is over.

 

10.) **OPTIONAL** - Right click on the app icon on your taskbar and select "Pin this program to taskbar" to allow quick use of the VPN app in the future.
