Password Controls for Geneseo Network Accounts


To prevent unauthorized access to SUNY Geneseo computer systems, Geneseo network accounts must be changed at least once every 180 days. Users must also practice proper password management such as:

  • never share a computer account
  • never use the same password for more than one account
  • never tell a password to anyone
  • never write down a password
  • never communicate a password by telephone, email, or messaging
  • log off or secure the screen before leaving a computer unattended
  • change passwords whenever there is a suspicion they have been compromised


Password must meet the following complexity requirements:
  • Your new password must contain at least 8 characters
  • Your new password must contain 3 out of the following character types:
    • Uppercase
    • Lowercase
    • Number
    • Special character
  • Your new password must not contain your username
  • Your new password must not contain a word longer than 2 characters from your name in our systems
  • Your new password must not match any of your previous 10
