This quotation leads to one of the overarching themes of the novel: obligation. Orm invites Einar to stay with him, perhaps out of a sense of obligation or duty. Throughout the novel, characters such as Thorstein the Black invite strangers to stay at their house over the winter (12). This generous offering of hospitality could be due to duty or obligations towards others in the viking society.
