What should be the primary purpose of the English major? To prepare students for further study in English? To make them competent readers of texts? Something more general (e.g., to make them "critical thinkers")? Something more specific (e.g., to make them "culturally literate" about the literature of one or more traditions?)
If it doesn't seem possible to identify a single "primary purpose," is it possible (even roughly) to rank-order any of the multiple purposes that you believe the major you should serve?
