SUNY Geneseo offers wireless network access across campus for your computer and mobile devices.  The SUNY Geneseo wireless network is based on IEEE 802.11 technology, also called "WiFi." This standard allows us to provide networking to computers over radio frequencies in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5.2 GHz ranges.

About Wireless at Geneseo

The SUNY Geneseo wireless network is an enterprise solution composed of redundant centralized controllers and access points manufactured by Cisco. Nearly all wireless devices commercially available today are compatible with our wireless network. We support 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11a/c capable devices only. The 802.11b protocol is very old and providing backwards compatibility decreases the speed and capacity of the entire wireless network.

SUNY Geneseo runs an Enterprise grade wireless network using technology from Cisco Systems. Consumer grade wireless devices which are designed for use on home wireless networks may not work on the campus wireless network. Personal wireless access points and printers with wireless connectivity actively interfere with the campus wireless network and are forbidden.

Policy: Guidelines Regarding Use of the 2.4 and 5.2 GHz Radio Frequencies

There are three wireless networks available on the SUNY Geneseo campus:

  • SUNY Geneseo is the preferred campus wireless network. This wireless network is secure (encrypted) and works with almost any client.
  • Geneseo Guest is not encrypted and is open to guest users that require basic network connectivity.  This network has limited access, only allowing web traffic (Ports 80/443). Communications over this wireless network can be overheard by malicious individuals.
  • gPlay is a wireless network restricted to gaming consoles and other media streaming devices that cannot connect to Enterprise grade wireless networks such as "SUNY Geneseo".

Connecting your Laptop

The basic steps to connect your laptop to the wireless network are as follows:

  1. Use SUNY Geneseo
    1. Deprecated - Encrypted Wireless Network (Windows 7)
    2. Encrypted Wireless Network (Windows 8)
    3. Encrypted Wireless Network (Windows 10)
    4. Encrypted Wireless Network (macOS)
    5. Encrypted Wireless Network (Chrome OS)
  2. Accept certificates
  3. Set SUNY Geneseo to be your preferred network

Connecting your Mobile Device

Connecting to the Geneseo wireless network saves on data usage and allows faster downloads. We recommend that you connect your device to our secure wireless network (SUNY Geneseo). Not only is this the most secure way to be online, it also saves your credentials so you don't have to log in every time you access your device.
