Turnitin is an originality and plagiarism service that is available for faculty and students directly in our Learning Management System – Canvas. 

This guide will provide the basics to help you get started with creating a turnitin assignment in your course(s). 

Add a Turnitin Assignment in Canvas

  1. Log in to Canvas and click on the course you wish to use with Turnitin.
  2. There are two options for adding a Turnitin assignment:
    1. Click on Assignments on the left menu and click on the plus sign (+) to add an assignment. This option allows you to immediately edit the settings of the assignment - you will need to remember to add it to your module.

    2. Click the plus sign (+) within a module to add an assignment. Enter an Assignment Name and click Add Item.

  3. Set Points, Assignment Group, and Display Grade as for grades configuration.
  4. At Submission Type, select External Tool from the dropdown list. Click Find to display the pop-up.
    1. In the Configure External Tool Options box, scroll through the list to click on Turnitin LTI API. The URL box will populate with the Turnitin address
    2. Click Select

  5. Configure Assign toDue Date, and Available from / until dates.
  6. Click Save & Publish or Save (to publish assignment at a later time)
  7. Upon saving the assignment, you will be presented with the embedded Turnitin view. Click the three parallel lines in the upper right corner and the Settings link to configure additional settings. 
  8. Continue to Configuring Additional Settings below.

Setting / Best Practice SuggestionTurnitin Configuration Images
  • Set the assignment dates
    • Start Date
    • Due Date
    • Feedback Release Date
  • Change submission file type restrictions if appropriate

Click the gear next to Optional Settings for additional configurations

  • Choose whether to allow late submissions
  • Leave all options checked under Compare submitted papers
  • Originality Report generation and resubmissions sets when your students can see the Turnitin originality report
    • For Resubmission Assignments (draft(s) and final paper): set to "Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until due date)"
    • Set due date for when final version is allowed

  • Exclude bibliographic materials set to Yes
  • Exclude quoted materials set to Yes
  • Exclude Small matches set to Yes (set small match to six words)
  • Allow students to see Originality Reports set to Yes

Configure this area to match the image:

  • Submit assignments set to Standard paper repository if this is not a REVISION ASSIGNMENT
  • Optionally select to Add PeerMark assignments, attach a rubric and save options for future assignments

Click Submit
