Did Banner, Argos, or WebConnect stop working for you in the Firefox web browser? Web Browsers have been steadily disabling the NPAPI protocol required to run Java applets. The most recent version of the public distribution of Firefox (v52) released on March 8, 2017 disabled NPAPI and thus broke any Java based applications. Read on for details and solutions to keep running those applications.

 You have two choices: use a different browser or re-enable Java in Firefox via some manual configuration steps.

  1. (Option 1): Use a different web browser to run your Java application that still supports NPAPI. These include Internet Explorer (for Windows) and Safari (for Mac).
    1. If you're running Windows10, MS Edge is the default browser and you may not see Internet Explorer readily available. You can find it by using Windows Search and typing "Internet Explorer". You then launch Internet Explorer and can even pin it to your toolbar for future use.

    2. The Firefox ESR release, which Geneseo is trying to standardize, also still supports the NPAPI plugin architecture and Java. Contact your TSP to convert your Firefox installation to the ESR version.

  2. (Option 2): Re-enable Java within Firefox using the following steps:
    1. Open a new tab in Firefox and enter about:config in the url location field. Press the "I Accept the Risk" button:
    2. Use your mouse to "right-click" anywhere within the config screen and select New → Boolean from the options menu that appears:

    3. Enter the following name:  plugin.load_flash_only

    4. Select false as the value of the Boolean and press OK.

    5. Close the about:config tab and restart Firefox. Your Java applications like Banner, Argos, and SUNY WebConnect should now work.

Other Things to Try

The steps listed above usually solve the problem. There have been a few situations where CIT has used one of the following additional steps to resolve the issue and get Banner or other Java applications working on Firefox. You may want to consult with the CIT HelpDesk.

  1. Uninstall and reinstall Firefox.

  2. Refresh Firefox via the following procedure:
    1. Open a new tab and type:  about:support
    2. Press the Refresh Firefox button.

  • Remember that a VPN connection is required if you are using Banner from off-campus.
  • Banner is being modified by the vendor to be a pure web application and that will not require the Java plugin. CIT is currently working on plans to deploy the new version. We anticipate that the Java plugin will be completely eliminated for Banner by Q3 of 2018.
  • Argos has another option for the full Argos client that does not require the Java plugin. CIT will be working on plans to migrate to that version by June 2017.
