SUNY has a partnership with Lumen Learning and Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI) that provides access to courses at no cost for all SUNY campuses and students. Course adoption is as easy as filling out a request form in our Ready-to-Adopt catalog at oer.suny.edu.

When you adopt an OER course, it can be easily integrated into a Canvas module.

Before You Start

  • Please note you will need a SUNY OLI account prior to building and working with your courses in your LMS. You can request an OLI account here
  • The Course Builder can only be accessed by instructors. If you already have an OLI account and need us to add instructor privileges, please email Lumen Support: support@lumenlearning.com.

Steps

  1. OLI's tool for setting up courses is called the Course Builder. To get started, log into your SUNY OLI account here: https://suny.oli.cmu.edu/
  2. Instructors can access the Course Builder by clicking the "Create a new course" link at the top of their Manage Course page. This PDF has detailed instructions: SUNY OLI Course Selection and Adoption.pdf
  3. Add your OLI Content to a Canvas module as an External Tool. The name of the Tool you'll select is Open Learning Initiative (OLI) Integration. For detailed directions  on how to do this, visit the Canvas Guide, How to add an external tool as a module item.
