 Intended Learning Outcome

Students will demonstrate the ability to write effectively.

 To graduate, majors must complete Socl 265. Students in this course wrote three papers each of which identified how a sociological theorist offered an implicit theory of emotions.  Course time was devoted to instructing students on how to write a paper making an effective argument.

 Effectiveness of introduction, effectiveness of topic sentences, effectiveness of conclusion, and relevance of material considered were assessed (on a scale of 1-100) to evaluate clarity of student argumentation.

Criteria for Success

We hoped the great majority of students would score above 80 on a scale of 1-100 on one of the last two papers

Assessment results

Students scoring 80-87 were identified as meeting expectations

Students scoring 88-100 were identified as exceeding expectations

Students scoring 70-80 were scored as approaching expectations.

 43 students completed the class

 40 met (13 students) or exceeded (27 students) expectations.

 Three students did not meet expectations, scoring in the 60s.  These students’ failure does not reflect on the program. One of these students attended 67% of classes, one student attended 47% of classes and the third attended 53% of classes. In short, the students did not receive the instruction that would have allowed them to succeed. One of these students received a D in the class. While she “completed” the class, she did not do well enough in the class to receive major credit and has subsequently enrolled in the class again. Thus, only 2 of 42 students who were able to use the course to meet their major requirements did not at least meet expectations and these two students attended less than 53% of the classes.  Had they received course instruction by attending class, it is likely instruction would have been effective in helping them write effectively.

Thus, all but 2 of 42 students at least met expectations and the two who did not meet expectations failed to attend sufficient classes to be instructed in the skills needed to meet the learning outcome.
