Assessment Results

Oral Discourse Assessment 2019-20

APAC, Spring 2021

  • Totals across the college:

LO1: n=290, plus 169 in L&L

Targets ranged from 80% will approach expectations or better to 80% will meet expectations or better. No department missed their target by more than 1 point.

LO2: n=20 100% met expectations for the outcome.

  • Individual Department Assessment of Oral Discourse:

ANTH: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/Anth+Assessment+Results+2019-2020

     SLO #2 on annual report. No data gathered due to conversion to online courses of the three in which oral discourse data was to be gathered. Faculty collected annotated powerpoints instead,  and did not apply the oral discourse rubric.

ARTH: blank file for 2019-20

BIOL: COVID survey only for 2019-20

CHEM: COVID survey only for 2019-20

COMN: assessed research in 2019-20; outcomes identified for 20-21 do not include oral discourse

ENGL: assessed 1 outcome each for literature and creative writing tracks, not oral discourse

GEOG: 2 outcomes assessed, not oral discourse

GSCI: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/2019-2020+GenEd+Oral+Discourse+Assessment+for+GSCI

    N=28 on learning outcome 1, in GSCI 341

    79% met or exceeded expectations; departmental target is 80% meet or exceed

    N=20 on learning outcome 2

    100% met the outcome in GSCI 391 or 392

HIST: COVID survey only for 2019-20

L&L: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/Languages+and+Literatures+Program+Assessment+AY+2019-2020

    2nd means of assessment measuring cultural knowledge was to measure oral communication.

    The outcomes are not identical to SUNY Gen Ed. In the future it would be good to use the gen ed rubric as well in the Oral Discourse year, so results can be compared and combined with data gathered by other majors.

    n=169

    Oral discourse measured in relation to cultural knowledge, in the target language. Unique rubric can’t be combined with other data

MATH: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/Math+Assessment+Results+2019-2020

    First means of assessment was completed in spite of the pandemic, second was not.

    n=35, in MATH 348

    The mean for all students was above a 3 on all measures, the target was to be above a 2, on a 4 point scale. Note that 83% of students met or exceeded the expectations in all parts of the rubric.  No student scored 1 (not meeting expectations) on any part of the rubric.

MUSC: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/pages/viewpageattachments.action?pageId=3473446&metadataLink=true&preview=/3473446/161677995/Report%20on%20Oral%20Discourse%20Results%202019-2020-Music.docx

    Music’s report did not load as a child page where it should, but the report on Oral Discourse is at this link.

    n=22, in MUSC 227, 335, 311

    100% earned 2.0 or higher; 77% earned 3 or higher.

    Target is 80% of students earn 2.0 or higher on 4.0 scale

PHIL: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/Phil+Assessment+Results+2019-20

    LO #7 in the major overlaps the Oral Discourse gen ed LO

    n=7, in Phil 397

    82% meet or master expectations.

     The rubric is different from the college’s, and next time they will use the college’s.

     82 percent of students meet or master the learning objective, using an average of the direct and indirect method’s results.

PHYS: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/Physics+and+Astronomy+Assessment+Results%2C+2019-2020

    See LO #2, which is communication. The second means of assessment addresses oral discourse

    n=34, in PHYS 341 seminar

    97% scored 2.0 or better, 82% 3 or better. Target is 80% or better earn 2.0 or higher on scale from 0-4.

PLSC: One outcome each for PLSC and IR are addressed, no oral discourse assessment

PSYC: COVID survey only for 2019-20 -- own form with lots of student responses. Conducted Oral Discourse Assessment in 2020-21.

SOCL: Assessed student writing component of communication only

THEA: No assessment filed for 2019-20

SoE: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/2019+-+2020+Assessment+Results

    n=54, in SPED 385

     Total Average Score = 2.02 out of 3

    Organization = 2.28

    Expression = 1.50

    Presentation = 2.30

SoB: https://wiki.geneseo.edu/display/acadassess/Assessment+Results+2019-2020?preview=/170656869/170656872/%5BBS%5DGroup%20disscussion%20on%201920%20AOL%20reports.pdf

    100% or approx 110 students, in MGMT 263

    Over 80% met expectations, which is SOB’s benchmarks

    Score dropped from 2.0 to 1.9 in presentation skills.

Reflection on Results
  • Discussion and Actions proposed by Departments:

SOB students should rehearse once before presenting and should take INTD 205 in the sophomore year to learn the basics of oral presentation skills earlier. PHIL will use the Gen Ed rubric for assessment next time. GSCI will find earlier courses in which to train and practice using a canvas module and provide more 1-1 guidance in 391 and 392 seminars.

  • Discussion and Actions proposed by APAC:

Ask departments to assess oral discourse on the same cycle as the college wide gen ed assessment of Oral Discourse. Ask departments to assess learning outcome 2, students’ assessment of another person’s oral presentation. We know that some departments that regularly conduct oral discourse assessment were not able to, due to the move to remote teaching in Spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some planned to make it up in 2020-21, which will be reported in the wiki in fall 2021.

  1. Assessment Process

The second learning outcome seems to be unclear to those conducting assessment.

2. Learning Outcomes

In this case, they are defined by SUNY

LO 1: Develop proficiency in oral discourse

LO 2: Evaluate an oral presentation according to established criteria

3. Assessment Instruments

In this case, rubrics are defined college wide. Not all departments use the college-wide gen ed rubric. Some were not aware of it, others have deliberately altered it to gather data chosen by their faculty. GSCI evaluates LO2 by requiring students to evaluate a talk given by a peer. Students that complete the survey during class are considered to have met expectations.  APAC is discussing better ways to communicate Learning Outcomes and rubrics to be assessed for general education outcomes that fall under majors in the future. A meeting of all assessment coordinators, where we provide the learning outcomes and rubrics, and perhaps provide a good example from past assessment, is a good option.

4. Use of Results

GSCI does an admirable job in defining how the assignments in several courses can be added or altered to help more students meet and achieve expectations. APAC would like to communicate the expectation to all departments that they assess both learning outcomes and use the college rubric, so that APAC and individual departments can have a more complete data set from which to make decisions in the future.

Summarize departmental discussion of assessment results. (Discussion Guidelines) Have you made, or are you considering, any changes (to courses, programs, co-curriculum, use of other campus resources) in light of assessment results?  If so, please describe the changes below.

the gathering of Oral Discourse data was significantly disrupted during 2019-20 by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Associate Provost reminded department assessment coordinators to add this assessment to the plan for 2020-21, and preliminary investigation shows more than one department did so. Those results will not be available until fall 2021. In some cases we discovered departments are off-cycle with the college wide assessment of Oral Discourse, and they have been asked to realign the department's cycle on this outcome to match the college. In other cases we discovered departments are not assessing learning outcome 2, in which students assess an oral presentation. The APAC Committee was asked to evaluate the oral discourse assessment results from 2019-20.

Parts II and III of the CAC Assessment Report:

II: Identifying of the Learning Outcome Goals of Your Academic Unit for next year.

Name 1-3 learning outcome goals you will assess next year. This next year's goals may be based on assessment from last year or the planned rotation of student learning outcomes assessment. By archiving this information on the wiki using this form, you can access these goals next year.

Goal 1: Oral Discourse assessment results postponed during 2019-20 will be posted for 2020-21

How you will measure your success: 80% of students in these academic programs will meet expectations for Oral Discourse learning outcomes; departments will discuss ways to improve student outcomes. More departments will assess learning outcome 2, in which students evaluate others' oral presentations.
