  1. Closing the Assessment Loop, September 2021

By the end of the 2020-21 academic year, we had already implemented some of the changes/ideas that students on the Department of Music's Student Equity Commission (SEC) suggested:

    • A student of color from the SEC is guaranteed a seat on the Musical Theatre Program’s Play Selection Committee.
    • We spoke about our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at the fall 2021 department convocation.
    • The faculty completed one training session with robbie routenberg, SUNY Geneseo's Chief Diversity Officer.

Over the course of the 2021-22 academic year, we plan to do the following:

    • We will continue meeting with members of the SEC. We have already scheduled three meetings for the fall. At these meetings, we will work with students to clearly define the terms “diversity,” “equity,” and “inclusion.” *Over the course of the 2020-21 academic year, we learned that students do not necessarily understand what is meant by the term equity, in particular.
    • Along the lines above, we will add a diversity, equity, and inclusion category to the learning outcomes for the BA in Music.
    • We will schedule another training session with a staff member from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
    • We will work with SEC members to design a “prior musical experience survey” that all faculty will be able to access.
    • We will work on designing a colloquium series. We hope that such a series will address students’ desire for more opportunities to engage with each other and with faculty outside of lessons, rehearsals, and class meetings.
