In accordance with guidelines established by the SUNY Provost's Office through the SUNY-wide General Education Assessment Review group (GEAR), Geneseo conducts ongoing assessment of general education learning outcomes. To learn more, you can read the page on Campus-Based General Education Assessment for SUNY. The short version of what you'll learn there, however, is that Geneseo assesses all its general education areas on a three-year rotation using assessment measures that are for the most part locally developed.

The timetable for Gen. Ed. assessment appears below. In any given year, you can see which areas are up for assessment by consulting This Year in Gen. Ed. Assessment.

Year One (AY beginning 2014, 2017, 2020 . . .)

Year Two (AY beginning 2015, 2018, 2021 . . .)

Year Three (AY beginning 2016, 2019, 2022 . . .)

Three of the above areas - Basic Research, Oral Discourse, and Information Management - have no correspondence with particular General Education courses at Geneseo. Students meet the learning outcomes in these areas through coursework in the major. The Library is responsible for assessing student learning in Information Management outcomes. Individual programs are responsible for assessing student learning in Basic Research and Oral Discourse. To learn more about the assessment process in any given area, follow the link to that area's page.
