  1. Another tip from my own experience as a student in online courses is to have students turn course principles into case studies taken from their own experience. I've had productive online discussions where the conversation hinged on taking something we had read and applying it to real world situations. This is useful only in specific instances (legal principles, codes of ethics, and philosophical quandaries spring to mind), but has the potential for much deeper discussion than in class because students can refer back to the texts to construct their argument.
