Beginning in Fall 2020, Geneseo Faculty and Staff will be able to issue FOUR distinct “Notifications” or “Alerts” in Navigate. When you sign on at, look for the option to “Issue an Alert” about a student in the right-hand menu of your home page.

This guide explains when to issue an alert and what happens when you do.

Please remember that comments you write in "Alerts" are part of a student's educational record, even though they are not shared directly with students.  When you issue an alert, keep your comments specific and factual.

Attendance Concern

Use this alert when a student stops coming to class for a noticeable length of time. You may write comments, but they are not sent to the student. Do select your class. The alert will send the student an email and “Attendance Concern” will be in the subject line. This is the text of the email:

Because engagement with classes is important to successful learning, your faculty member has indicated that they are concerned about your class attendance. Please keep in touch with your faculty when you need to miss class, and communicate with them about work you may have missed.

If you will be away from class for an extended period of time for illness or an emergency, please notify the Dean of Students (

If you would like to discuss whether or not to remain in a class with a member of the academic planning & advising (DAPA) staff, you may make an appointment by following these directions:

The Dean of Academic Planning & Advising (DAPA) reads weekly reports on Attendance Concerns. She will contact a student after they have received three or more alerts.

Extra Guidance/Support Needed

Use this alert when you are concerned about a student beyond the scope of your course (e.g., concerns about well being, financial aid, or other non-academic issues). This alert will open a “case” for the DAPA office, and a member of the DAPA staff will outreach to the student. Please include comments explaining why you have entered the alert. This alert does not trigger an automatic email to the student and the student will not see your comments. The DAPA office will make referrals to the Dean of Students, Health & Counseling, Financial Aid, etc., as appropriate.

Recognizing Good Work

Please try to click on this alert often. It generates an automatic email to the student, and a copy of the email is sent to the student’s academic advisor, academic coach, and athletic coach (when such relationships exist). This is the text (and fonts!) of the email the student receives. “Recognizing Good Work” will be in the subject line:


Your professor wanted you to know that they noticed the good work you have been doing in their class. Every time you make a thoughtful contribution to a discussion, write a persuasive essay, study hard for an exam, or turn a corner and improve your grade, your learning takes a leap forward.

Your efforts are paying off! Congratulations!

Struggling in a Class

This alert automatically emails the student but it doesn’t show the alert reason in the subject line (and it doesn’t send your comments). The student receives this email directing them to communicate with their faculty and seek out support resources:

Hello! Your professor is concerned that you might be struggling in their course this semester. We want to make sure that you get assistance soon -- please don't be afraid to reach out for help.

The first place to start is contacting your professor. Every professor has office hours -- check your syllabus to find out how to meet with them. Before your meeting, write down some of your thoughts and plan what you'd like to talk about. This isn't the time to hide. If you have fallen behind on your work, try to think about ways you can get back on track. But your professor also wants to know if you are understanding the course content. Write down a few examples of areas where you weren't successful on a test or in your homework. See if your professor can help you understand them.

The second step to take is to get some assistance with your course material. If your class includes "Supplemental Instruction," go to the SI sessions. You can check out SI schedules on this website:

The Writing Learning Center helps students in all courses -- not just writing courses. The Math Learning Center also assists students in 100 and 200-level Math courses. You can schedule an online appointment with a tutor in either of these learning centers by visiting their websites. Additional information about learning centers and tutoring is available on the Academic Support website.

Some students find online delivery of instruction especially challenging. KOALA (Knights Online Academic Learning Assistance) provides one-on-one help navigating online course materials, organizing your coursework, managing your time, and setting and meeting goals for completing assignments. Online appointments are available, via the website.

For general academic issues, including struggling in classes, the Academic Planning and Advising Office and the Academic Peer Mentors program offer online appointments. You will find scheduling directions on these websites.

Finally, if you would like to speak to someone about non-academic concerns that are interfering with your success in class, such as illness, family needs, or personal struggles, please contact the Dean of Students or visit their office in the MacVittie College Union 354.
